1880 Oct 15 - Surry Co., NC - Letter found in the Draper Manuscripts from John Banner of Mt. Airy in Surry County, NC, son of Rebecca Evans Banner:
Dear Sir:
Your favor of the 4th just cam to hand on the 9th. I have not been as prompt in reply as I desired to be owing to the illness of a dear little grand daughter which terminated in her death about that time of diphtheria.
I now take great pleasure in furnishing you with such facts as coming to my knowledge relative to Capt. Evans, his given name was PHILIP. He was born in what was then Surry Co, NC on Town Fork Creek near Walnut Cove, had a brother by the name of DANIEL EVANS, both of whom were in the Battle of Guilford Court house. I have often heard my mother speak of it the great anxiety felt while the fight was going on which was in hearing. You will understand that my mother was the sister of Uncle PHILIP & DANIEL EVANS & recollected all about it tho small. After the Revolutionary War was over my Uncle PHILIP EVANS married and settled in Greenville Co, SC & my Uncle DANIEL settled somewhere in the West, but I don't now recollect where as to PIIILLIP, he was certainly in the Battle of King Mountain and perhaps was a Capt., I cannot say as to that his brother DANIEL was with him but in that fight also. As to Samuel Blackburn, I can give you no satisfactory account, men take to say that there was a man of the name of Black and I have thought his name was WILLIAM BLACKBURN who was a true Whig and Patriot in the Revolution his name may have been Samuel. I am not certain as to that but he was certainly a true man and a terror to the Tories in those trying times. My UNCLE PHIILLIP, I know died in Greenville Co, SC sense the year 1840 at an advanced age leaving several children. I enclose a letter from his son, Wm H. Evans to my brother Elisha in 1869. Which will perhaps aid you in obtaining further information he is still living and I think when his father died.
Andrew Kincannon lived an died within ten miles of this place. I always understand he was in the war of the Revolution and a true patriot. I am sorry I am not able to give you a more satisfactory account of these heroes.
I am now nearly 80 years old my mother and father died some 20 years ago at a good old age. I will be pleased to hear from you at any time and if I can gather anything connects with King Mountain incidents will do so hereafter.
Very Respectfully,
J. Banner

This family moved to Ohio.213

Research: Born 12 September 1786, it is thought that the Vasser or Vassor in Joseph's name was for his grandmother, Olive Hurst. All indications are that she was the daughter of William Vasser, of Isle of Wight, Virginia, who had among his ten children a daughter, Olive, and a son, Joseph. A Joseph Vasser settled in Southampton County, Virginia, near the Hursts in Surry County, Virginia. Olive Vasser may have had contact with Howard Hurst easily enough. This theory has not been documented. The Hurst family also lived in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.
Joseph Vasser Grigg was a Quaker in his early life. He grew up in Westfield Monthly Meetings in North Carolina. He went to Highland County, Ohio, with his brother Moses Hurst Grigg in 1807. Joseph returned to Westfield in 1810 and was disowned by the Quakers 8 Sep-tember 1810 because he had been in the Militia, probably in Ohio, and had taken an oath, and evidently refused to recant.
Joseph married Mary "Polly" Banner 17 December 1812 in Stokes County, North Carolina. She was born 17 September 1785 in Surry County, North Carolina. Joseph bought 170 acres from his father, Moses, for $500 cash in hand, on the North Fork of Tate's Creek, joining his brother, William A. Grigg's line and also Eli Jessup's line. This was on 4 September 1815. Here their seven children were born on the Tate's Creek plantation, where Joseph himself was born and reared.
In the 1830's Joseph and "Polly" moved to Centerville, Wayne County, Indiana, near his sisters, Mary Hiatt, Martha Talbot, and Ann Moore. Joseph died there 16 April 1850 and is buried in Crown Hill Cemetery.
Joseph was born "Grigg," but the spelling gradually became Gregg in the Quaker community in Indiana. Most of his descendants use the name "Gregg."

Joseph Banner, an aged old man, resident of Stokes – he has been

young. Banner knew him when he was an orphan boy bound to Capt. Bynum in
then Surry County. Bynum was Banner’s neighbor. Eaton returned to
William Boyles, also in Banner’s neighborhood. Banner was informed by
“his brother-in-law” or Charles Mcanally who was in the Battle of Gates
Defeat that Christopher was in the battle and he then expected he was
killed or taken prisoner as he was missing for some time. Christopher
returned to William Boyles and afterwards Banner saw Christopher at the
old Moravian town under Capt. William Shepperd in the cavalry guarding
and carrying the prisoners from the Battle of Kings Mountain towards
Hillsborough.

Research: Legend or fact has Charles was courting Sarah Banner. He called upon her unexpectedly. She was in the back yard and raced upstairs to preen herself and just at the top got tangled in freshly cured cowhides, tumbled down the stairs in disarray and was picked up by Charles. When Sarah was stolen by the Indians and taken up near the Yadkin River, she was made to ride behind a brave on his horse. Discovered tearing off her apron into strips to drop along the trail so that she could be followed more easily, she was stripped of her clothing and taken to camp. Charles followed, accompanied by friends, found her, took off his overcoat, held it before his eyes, walked to the lady and wrapped her in it. She went back home riding behind him on his horse with only his overcoat around her." as written by Francis P. Martin. 216
