Where is Henry Banner from?

1751 - Eleanor and Joseph arrive in North Carolina. "Joseph Banner of Stokes born in 1749, in Pennsylvania, moved to N.Carolina in 1751. His father settled in what was then called Anson, now Stokes, on Town Fork, near the present Village of Germanton - about 1753."2

3 Mar 1752 - Henry applied for two grants from Lord Granville. One grant #563 of 640 acres in Granville County(Rowan County) on the waters of the Buffalo Creek and one grant, #28, for 640 acres on the east side of the waters of the Gargals Creek,also called Dorithea Creek(after Countess Zinzendorf, whose husband was a patron of the Moravians), now called Muddy Creek. NOTE: These first two land grants are in the name of Henry BONNER.

27 Dec 1752 - Moravians began surveying the Wachovia Tract.

12 Apr1753 - Rowan County formed from Anson County.

13 Jan 1753 - Moravians finsh surveying the Wachovia Tract. The Wachovia Tract is 98,985 acres and is in Forsyth County, NC.

20 Mar 1753 - Both of the above land grants(#28 and #563) were entered. The grant on the Gargals Creek[also spelled Carguel's or Gargales] went to the Moravians and was their property near Bethabara.

21 May 1753 - William Churton surveyed 500 acres [Henry only received 420 acres] for Henry on the Buffalo Creek from original grant #563. The cost of this property was 16 shillings and 1/2 pence for a year. Chain carriers were Jn.Runnels and James McCoine. Grant #32.

17 Nov 1753 - First Moravians came to Bethabara (means "house of passage") in Wachovia. NOTE: The Moravians called Henry - MR. BENNER and later began calling him MR. BANNER.

17 Nov 1753 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "We rose early, having had a cold night, it looked much like snow. Some of the Brethren went ahead with axes and grubbing hoes to clear the road and cut down the steep banks of the creeks. One mile from Altem's we crossed the Down Forck Creek[Town Fork Creek], and came to the new road leading across our land to the Etkin[Yadkin]. On the right hand side of the creek is a plantation[near Henry Banners], and the people gave us two sacks of pumpkins, and offered us a wagon load more free of charge. Two miles from our land we crossed Buffler Creek[Buffalo Creek]. One mile from our land we stopped for a noon rest. The Brn. Gottlob and Nathanael had gone ahead to the next plantation[Henry Banners], which adjoins our land, and the people presented them with a couple of bushels of turnips."

31 Dec 1753 - MORAVIAN DIARY - " Mr. Banner came and later two hunters ". Henry apparently the spent the night at Bethabara.

15 Dec 1753 -MORAVIAN DIARY - "Br. Loesch and Br.Kalberlahn went to Mr. Benners where they bled a patient".

NOTE: Henry Banner's home stood on this property, according a Banner Researcher, his plantation was called "Oakwood".

5 Mar 1754 -MORAVIAN DIARY -"some of the Brethren improved the King's Road [This is the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road] on our land from Benners to
Grassy Fork".

15 Mar 1754 -Rowan County,NC William Churton surveyed 217 acres from original grant #563 on the Buffalo Creek for Henry Banner. Chain carriers were Daniel Davis and William Harris. Grant #182.

7 Mar 1754 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "Mr. Benner came and another man seeking strayed horses. Nearly every day we have extra people to feed".

16 Jun 1754 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "Br. Loesch went to Mr. Banner's for a couple of hundred tobacco plants. Mr. Ferry[Isaac Ferre,resident of Bryant's settlement] and two other men were here, one to be bled".

22 Jul 1755 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "...Mr. Benner and a neighbor came looking for strayed horses which they had searched for several days during the evening service. When Mr. Benner returned home he found his wife and children gone, he ran back to Bethabara very upset. The Moravians shot a gun and sounded the trumpets and Mrs. Benner came running with their four children. Mrs. Benner carried a child and an older child carried a smaller child. The Brethren went with the family back to Mr. Benners home, Mrs. Benner saw 3 men breaking in either Indian or white , she coudn't tell which. Not much was taken so the brethren did return home passing William Owen on the way home who told them that people were moving and leaving the area." NOTE: William Owen was a robber, he was arrested on 31 Jul 1755 and sentenced"to the gallows" on 18 May 1756. NOTE: William Owen, one of the earliest residents of Mulberry Fields,now Wilkesboro, lived on land owned by Morgan Bryant,Sr., grandfather of Rebecca Bryant Boone, wife of Daniel Boone. Also, in Jun, 1755, Rowan County, NC, William Owens not guilty of murder but guilty of medling.

25 Jul 1755 -MORAVIAN DIARY -"Mr. Benner's brother-in-law(?) and the younger Mr. Guest(Gist) were here, and that their settlement also was going to move, but they did not yet know where."

3 Aug 1755 - MORAVIAN DIARY-"The Altems and the Benners went home today, thanking us heartily for all the love that has been shown to them."

1756 - Rowan Co.,NC - Henry Shaddock, Aaron Pinson. . . . . Edward Elerby of Anson Co. fined 40 sh. for non-appearance as petty jurymen Salisbury District Court 1756. HENRY BANNER & Geo:. . . . of Anson also.3

18 May 1756- MORAVIAN DIARY - "...Indians had seized Mr. Haltem(Altem)[William Haltham] horse and that Mr. Benner and all
his family had fled..." "...At noon Brn. Loesch and Kalberlahn went to see whether Mr. Benner had come home, but they met him, his wife,children and servant coming to stay with us for several days.... the Indians entered his home and took his best clothing and all his money... they may be Cherokees..."

20 May 1756 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "By Bro. Loesch's advice Mr. Benner and his family went home, he spoke of moving away, selling his corn in the field, we should be very sorry to have him do this and hope he will reconsider."

25 May 1756 - MORAVIAN DIARY - " Today Mr. Benner's wife,children, Negress and mulatto arrived again,also the younger Guest and his wife, Mr. Haltem's wife and children, and a Dunkard, or Bearded Man.."NOTE: The Haltems did leave the area and move elsewhere. Eventually the Guest or Gist family also left the area and went elsewhere". The Halthems moved to "Cow Meadow", in South Carolina.

27 May 1757 - Rowan County, NC - HENRY BANNER fined nisi(means "unless") for non-appearance as juror at last Surperior Court.3

1759 Henry Banner appears on the Rowan County tax list with one taxable.

24 May 1759- Rowan County,NC, Henry Banner bought 480 acres from Phillip Wilson and his wife Mary on Town Fork & Mill Creek next James ?"4
Both Phillip and Mary marked their signatures with an "X". Two pages of this deed are missing from the deed book and microfilm.

18 Feb 1761 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "... the Creeks have joined the Cherokees... the next week H. Benner's house was pillaged, probably by Indians... the Creeks have been with supplied ammunition by the French...".

8 Apr 1761 -MORAVIAN DIARY - "... Henry Benner who has fled from his house fourteen times during this war
and has now been here fourteen months, returned to his farm on the 23rd of April..."(came in Feb.1760)

23 Apr1761- MORAVIAN DIARY- " ...Henry Benner returned to his farm".

6 Jun 1764 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "...Last summer our neighbor Benner bought a negro from a man who had stolen him ; later the negro ran away from his next owner and he has now returned to Benner, and as he seems to be out of his mind he is being taken to jail..."

1 & 2 Sept 1765 - There are two identical deeds ["lease and release method"] with the same beginning point of 700 acres that Jacob Lash sold to Valentine Fry on the Town Fork Creek of the Dan River adjacent Henry Banner's grant of 17 Mar 1762(?)( Must be Henry's grant 13 Nov 1756). Signed Jacob Lash. Witnesses were Manhaus Mucksh and Christian Gottleib Reuter. NOTE: Reuter is a surveyor and cartographer extradinaire.

11 Oct 1766 - MORAVIAN DIARY "... we heard the approach of the company of boys and Br. Herbst was sent to Benners to meet them..."

14 Aug 1767 - MORAVIAN DIARY- "...near Henry Benners he met David Allen's son and several families from the Jerseys..."

1768 - Rowan County Tax List shows Henry with 4 taxables, Henry, Josuah[Joseph], 2 negroes, Prince and Tim. Henry lives next door to Abraham Marlin[Martin] who shows 2 taxables, Abraham and Cornel? Sale? Next to Abraham Martin is Johnson Marlin[Martin] with one taxable.

5 Sept 1768 - Rowan Co.,NC - Deed (143 acres) from Henry Banner to Richard Goode, Book #7, page 8: NOTE: this page is missing from the Rowan County Deed Book, however, a description was found in the McCubbin files in the library in Salisbury.

Sept 1772 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "...Soelle visted at the home of the Mr. Benner or Banner, with whom the Moravians has been friendly ever since they came to North Carolina and again recorded his sad impression that "this neighborhood is the darkest of all"....not far from Benner on the Town Fork lived James Hampton at whose house meetings were held by Soelle and some of the rough, wild spirits were moved to tears by his words.....eight miles away lived Moses Martin where Soelle spent the night enjoying the well-trained,quiet,orderly children...Soelle went back to Salem by way of Banner' s on Townfork and Bernhard Fehr's on Belews Creek...."

1773 MORAVIAN DIARY - "...went today to Mr. Bagge's lot, which borders Henry Banner's and measured some hundred acres for a man named Hill".

13 Feb 1774 - From Moravian Archives - Henry and Benjamin spent an evening and a night at Bethabara Tavern; Horse and lodging,10 pence; one half pint West Rum, 1 shilling; one half pint ? ; 6 pence; and his
breakfast, 10 pence; one half pint of Whiskey, 6 pence; for Benjamin 5 shillings and 6 pence; one gill(4 oz or double shot) of whiskey, 4 pence; and lend in money, 8 shillings. The archives described this as"spirited evening".

18 Sept 1774 - MORAVIAN DIARY - "...Br. Fritz preached today at Mr. Benner's".

I Henry Banner of Surry County in North Carolina, Planter, being at present of perfect health mind and memory, but calling unto mind the mortality of my body & knowing that it is appointed for all Men once to die, do make ordain & publish this my last Will & Testament, That is to say; principally and first of all I commend my Soul into the hands of Almighty God and my Body to the Earth to be buried in Christian burial at the discretion of my Executors, and as touching such worldly Estate wherewith it has pleased God to bless me in this life, I give bequeath and devise and dispose of the same
in the following manner and form; First, I give bequeath and devise all the land which I shall have in possession or a just claim to at the Hour of my death, to my FOUR dearly beloved children JOSEPH, EPHRIAM, BENJAMIN, AND CHARITY, their respective Heirs and Assigns, to be divided among them share & share alike as ought as possible, which Division I will have to be made by Three Freeholders residing in this County, who are to be nominated by the Executors and Oversee of this my last Will and Testament. Aust denied having killed the deer but when Mr. Benner declared the would push the case in Court, Aust offered to pay 20 shillings and the costs. Mr. Benner's party demanded 40 shillings".

May 1777 - From Moravian Archives - Henry Banner paid his debt to Bethabara Tavern of one pound, 3 shillings and 4 pence.

15 Sept 1777- MORAVIAN DIARY "... Yesterday Br. Fritz held the funeral service for a woman a sister of Mrs. Banner, about 150 people were present.... the weather was rainy..." Who is the sister Mrs. Benner??

1778 - Rowan County consisted of part of Forsyth(Clemmons and Union Cross), all of Davidson, Rowan, Iredell, and part of Alexander Counties.

13 Jun 1778-From Joseph Winston's Land Entry Book - "Henry Banner enters 350 acres on lying on both sides of the Ruff Fork adjoining the Moravian Line, John Adams and my own line including my improvement". Warrent granted to H. S.(Henry Speer surveyed this property).

12 Oct 1778 - From Joseph Winston's Land Entry Book, "John Adams, Sr. enters 300 acres of land in Surry County on Ruff Fork adjoining Henry Banner including my improvement for quantity". Warrant granted to T. Adams, Jr.

19 Oct 1778 - Henry Banner issued a state grant for 500 acres on the Buffalo Creek, grant #459.

3 Dec 1778 - From Joseph Winston's Land Entry Book-"Henry Speer enters 100 acres of land in Surry County on the waters of the Buffelow Creek adjoining Henry Banner and Abraham Martin's line including the above
place for compliment". Warrant granted to R. L. (This is part of Henry grant #1197)

17 Dec 1778 - John Banner got a land grant for 300 acres in Rowan County on the Hambee Creek. Note: John's relation to Henry Banner is not known. Recent information has shown John to be the son of Jacob Banner. Is Jacob Banner related to Henry????

29 Jan 1779 - From Joseph Winston's Land Entry Book - "Henry Banners enters 500 acres of land in Surry County on Morgans Branch the waters of Buffelow beginning at a white oak running south with the Moravian line, thence along said line, thence North to Ephriam Banner's line, then to the beginning including the improvement whereon Benjamin Banner now lives". Warrant granted. Henry's grant #460.

3 Feb 1779 - Charles McAnally surveyed 494 acres,grant #459, on Buffalo Creek for Henry Banner. Chain Carriers were Joseph Banner and Ephriam Banner. Entry #1330.

20 Sept 1779 - North Carolina Grant to Moses Martin for 300 acres on Mill Creek of Townfork at James Martin's corner bound on North by James Martin and Thomas Evans.

3 Dec 1779 - Henry Speer(for Robert James) surveyed in Surry County 208 acres for Henry Banner, grant #357. Chain carriers were William Marten and William Fallis. NOTE: Willliam Marten was the son of Abraham Martin and William Fallis is described as a "hatter" on a later deed.

29 Jan 1780 - North Carolina Grant to Moses Martin for 300 acres on Mill Creek of Townfork at James Martin's corner bound on North by James Martin and Thomas Evans.

29 Jan 1780 - Moses Martin sold 160 acres for 10 shillings on both sides of Mill Creek of Town Fork , Tom Evans line. Signed Moses Martin. Witnesses were William Hill and Parish Sims.

3 Apr 1780 - North Carolina grant to Abraham Martin for 410 acres between Buffalo Creek and Townfork Creek,Banner's corner.

7 Oct 1780 - "Battle of King's Mountain", South Carolina.

Jan & Feb 1781 -General Daniel Morgan joining General Nathanael Greene leaves North Carolina for Southern Virginia, General Cornwallis pursues. Once General Greene got across flooded Roanoke River, General Cornwallis did not pursue.

17 Jan 1781 - "Battle of Cowpens", South Carolina - General Daniel Morgan fought and almost annihilated, Colonel Banastre Tarleton's Legion at this Battle.

15 Mar 1781- Battle of "Guilford Courthouse", North Carolina, American Generals Nathanael Greene fought General Cornwallis. NOTE: General Daniel Morgan, younger brother of Sarah Morgan Boone(mother of Daniel Boone) returned to Winchester,Va., very ill, before the "Battle of Guilford Courthouse."

of Surry on both sides of the rough fork, Beginning at a Hickory
running thence 18 chs. along the Moravian Line twenty six Chains
to a white Oak, then North forty five chains to a Post Oak,
then North Sixty Degrees West Ten Chains to a Pine, it being
Line agreed on by said BANNER & JOHN ADAMS, thence
North thirty four Chains to a black Oak, thence East thirty

26 May 1784 - Estate settlement of Robert Walker[Walkertown named for Robert Walker] by Job Martin mentions Henry Banner, John Adams, John
Martin, Salathiel Martin, Andrew Martin and Henry Speer.

16 Feb 1785 - North Caroina Grant #1215 "assigned" to Henry Banner by Henry Speer for 54 and1/4 acres on the Buffalo Creek.

27 Feb 1786 - Moses Martin and his wife Mary sold 150 acres on both sides of the Townfork Creek, James Hampton's line to Joseph Winston for 250 pounds. Signed Moses Martin. Witnesses were Henry Banner and William Wilson who signed his name with an "X". (Surry County)

May Court 1786 - The estate of Leonard Mosser [also spelled Mouser or Moser] owes money to Henry Banner.

30 Nov 1789- MORAVIAN DIARY - "Some from Bethabara went to the funeral of the elder Banner who passed out of time on the 28th. He was a true friend of the Brethren, and showed them much kindness when Bethabara was being built, remaining friendly to his end."

Paid by Joseph Banner executor of the estate of Henry Banner Deceased - To Traugotte Bagge, Abraham Steiner, Jacob Blum for sugar, rice, wine- 19 shillings and 8 pence(did they have a wake??); to Doctor? for making 2 coffins-19 shillings and 6 pounds(for Henry and Eleanor); to clerk Winston, George Hauser, Joseph Wagoner-1 pound and 14 shillings; to Matthew Esterlline as the voucher reads-1 pound,10 shillings and 6 pence; tax to John Cooley 3 pounds,2 shillings and 8 pence, to John Cooley Specie Certificates, 5 pounds, 13 shillings and to Charles McAnally for surveying 4 lots-3 pound and 4 shillings. Total is 7
pounds, 2 shillings and 4 pence. Paid to William Thornton for registering a Grant-4 shilllings, by allowance as executor(Joseph Banner) for his Service-25 pounds making the total as 42 pounds,6 shillings and 4 pence. Cash not divided is 12 pounds, 18 shillings and 8 pence and Specie Certificates 102 pounds at 7/8 - 35 pounds 2 shillings and 4 pence.

10 May 1790 - Charles McAnally surveyed 4 lots agreeable to the intructions of Joseph Banner exector of the estate of Henry Banner Deceased as directed by Joseph Winston, George Hauser and Joseph Waggoner chosen by Joseph Banner and Traugotte Bagge agreeable to the will of Henry Banner Deceased-Lot #1 to Joseph Banner,3601/4 acres north to John Clayton's lot,Buffalo Ford,Ephriam Banner's line. Lot #2 to Ephriam Banner,280 acres on the Buffalo Creek where he lives now. Lot #3 to John Cleaton, 348 acres near the creek. Lot #4 to Benjamin Banner,390 acres onJoseph Banner and John Cleaton's corner.NOTE: This lot surveyed WAS 420 and 1/2 acres over 30 !/2 acres per deed.

2 feb 1791 - Stokes County - Willliam Davis sold 150 acres to on Reubens Branch, Pete Simmons line, Henry Banner's line and Ephriam Banner's corner for 70 pounds. Signed Willliam Davis. Witnesses were William Waggoner and Henry Fry.

20 Dec 1791- North Carolina State Grant #1402 to John Appleton for 150 acres at William Davis corner near Reubens Branch, Banner's corner, Hills line.

5 Jun 1792 - Joseph Banner gave to Ephriam, Benjamin and John Clayton children of the deceased Henry Banner the sum of 312 pounds, 2 shillings and 8 pence farthing as part of legacy signed by Joseph Winston, Joseph Waggoner and each child.

7 Jun 1792 - Stokes County-"We the committee appointed to settle with executor of the estate of Henry Banner deceased have fully examined the several accounts and vouchers find that the four Legatees have each of them received their equal shares being 312 pounds, 2 shillings and 8 and 1/2 pence to each share. It also appears by the within amount that there is a balance of 5 pounds,14 shilllings and 8 pence due to the Legatees to be equally divided. Signed Christian Lash and Matthew Brooks."

7 Dec 1792 - Joseph Banner gave to Ephriam, Benjamin and John Clayton an additional 3 pounds and 4 shillings. Signed Joseph Winston and A.Robinson.

Jun 1793 - Moses Martin. "Blacksmith and Planter" had a will in Stokes County,NC. Moses names wife Mary sons Jesse, Jonathan, Zachariah, James, Moses,Jr., John, George and William who has not yet turned age 21. Daughters named are Margaret, Anne and Alice Heath, apparently married or a widow. Executors were wife Mary Martin and son Jesse Martin.

ca 1748 when Henry was 21, he married Charity Eleanor MARTIN, 2326, F, daughter of Unknown MARTIN, 10448, M, in Pennsylvania. Born ca 1730. Charity Eleanor died in Stokes Co.,NC ca 1789; she was 59.6
