"Whereas by virtue if a writ of
fini facias (?), issued by the Clerk of Court of pleas and quarter
sessions of Wake County, in the State aforesaid to me dicated as
Sheriff of Stokes County aforesaid and bearing test the third
Monday of August 1814, commanding me that of the goods chattels
lands and tenaments of GEORGE CLOUD and others in said county of
Stokes, I should cause to made the sum of four hundred and
forty three pounds ten shillings and three pence with interest from
the 16th day of May 1814 till paid which the governor recommended to the
use of the state, lately, in the County of Wake, aforesaid, again-
-st the said GEORGE CLOUD and others as aforesaid for a certain
debt an also the further sum of four pounds seven shillings
to the said Governor in behalf of the State of the by the said Court ad-
judged for costs and changes in that behalf in said suit and
that I the said Sheriff should have said monies before said
Courth at the suceeding Term. Now Know Ye, that I CHARLES
BANNER, sheriff of the County of Stokes aforesaid by virtue of said
execution to me so directed did levy upon and take into my poss-
-esion to satisfy said execution four negros as the property of said
GEORGE CLOUD to wit the negroes, EDY, LAMAR, MATILDA, and LETTY and
having duly advertised the same according to law did proceed to
set the same for cash to the highest bidder on the 17th day of
November 1814, When the said negroes being severally, set up and cried
they were severally Knocked down to JOHNSTON CLEMENT at the price
four hundred and one dollars he being the last and highest bidder.
This indenture witnessed that I the said CHARLES BANNER Sheriff of
the County of Stokes aforesaid for and in consideration of the sum
of four hundred and one dollar to me in hand paid on? and before
the sealing and delivery of these presents by the said JOHNSTON CLEMENT
the receipt whereof if hereby acknowledged, have bargained sold and
delivered and by these presents do bargain sale and deliver to the said
JOHNSTON CLEMENT, the said negros EDY, LAMAR, MATILDA and LETTY
to have and to hold the said negroes EDY, LAMAR, MATILDA, and LETTY to him
the said JOHNSON CLEMENT his Executors administrators and assigns forever,
In testimony whereof I the said CHARLES BANNER Sheriff of Stokes
aforesaid have hereunto set my hand and seal this 18th day of April

BANNER of Stokes County in No. Ca. Executors of the last will &
testament of the late JOHN SHAMUELL decd. for & in consideration of
Two Thousand nine hundred & sixty two dollars by J. G. LASH in a bond
dated this day have bargained & sold & by these presents doth bargain & sell
unto the said J. G. LASH his heirs & assigns forever four certain negros Slaves
vis, one named LEVI, aged fourteen years one WM.REISTLY?? twelve years one
WILLIS twelve years & one girl LEVINA elevin years all belonging to the
Estate of JOHN SHAMUELL decd the title of said negroes we do hereby covenant
& agree to warrant & forever defend unto the said J. G. LASH his heirs &

24 Sep 1857 -According to the People's Press Newspaper, Charles Banner died on Monday at his son's home in Mt. Airy, NC. "Mr. Banner was a highly esteemed, respected and useful citizen having served the county of Stokes in various public capacities, as member of the Legislature for several years, and as County Surveyor and Magistrate for many years".

Solomon H. died in Stokes Co.,NC on 11 Dec 1920; he was 98. Buried in Antioch Methodist Ch. Cemetery.

Solomon was a Methodist minister and lived with his family in Rural Hall, NC.

He and his wife did not have any children.

28 Feb 1778. Williamsburg,Va. - Examination of Jesse Briggs, et al, for stealing a horse belonging to Col John Flood Edmunds. Jesse Briggs to be jailed and tried at court in Williamsburg. (OB 23-191) There may be some notice of this trial in the VA Gazette. Note: This is probably not this Jesse Briggs, but another member of his family.

3 Feb 1829 - Surry Co.,NC - A deed was made to the Old Siloam Church lot by Joseph Howard and wife Nancy Howard to JESSE BRIGGS, Joseph Harrison, Tyre Freeman, Milton Cain, and John Prather, Trustees.31

14 Aug 1832 -Surry Co.,NC - From Bartholomew Marion' s Pension Application:
"Mr. Jesse Briggs a preacher in Methodist Church residing in the
county of Surry and Joseph Williams residing in the same county
hereby certify that we are well acquainted with Bartholomew Marion
who has subscribed and sworn to the above declartion that we
believe him to be seventy seven years of age that he's respected
and believed in the neighborhood he resides to have been a
volunteer of the Revolution and that we concur in that opinion.

Charles and Sarah are first cousins.
From "The Stokes County Heritage Book,Vol.II", page 338 - "Legend or fact has Charles was courting Sarah Banner. He called upon her unexpectedly. She was in the back yard and raced upstairs to preen herself and just at the top got tangled in freshly cured cowhides, tumbled down the stairs in disarray and was picked up by Charles. When Sarah was stolen by the Indians and taken up near the Yadkin River, she was made to ride behind a brave on his horse. Discovered tearing off her apron into strips to drop along the trail so that she could be followed more easily, she was stripped of her clothing and taken to camp. Charles followed, accompanied by friends, found her, took off his overcoat, held it before his eyes, walked to the lady and wrapped her in it. She went back home riding behind him on his horse with only his overcoat around her." as written by Francis P. Martin.

County of Giles and State of Tennessee, my true and lawful atty. for
me to act as executor aforesaid, to sell a certain portion of land in
the State of North Carolina and the County of Stokes belonging to the
estate of John McAnally, who is hereby authorized to make a deed, for said
portion of land in my name, as though I myself were there selling
said land, thereby notifing and confirming the acts of the said Joseph
