1912 Jan 2 - Carroll Co., Mo. - Obituary from the Carrollton Daily Democrat:
Thomas Standley, the oldest native born citizen of Carroll County, died at his home in Trotter township Sunday December 31, at 6 a.m., aged 88 years, 2 months and 14 days. He was born in this county October 17, 1823, when the county was new and few settlers here. He married Sarah A. Harper, daughter of Reuben Harper, March 14, 1846. She departed this life February 5, 1858. To this union five children were born, two of whom-H.C. and S.R. Standley are dead, three are living; Mrs. John B. Simpson, Silvan Springs, Arkansas, Mrs. S.R. Brickens and Mrs. R.I. Gentry of this city. The life of this citizen is that of the county in the early days, he was one of those who helped make this county habitable for man and developed the riches that are around us today. He was a good citizen and though in the latter years of his life, he was not active, still the same spirit moved him until his death. His acquaintance was not extensive in our day for all the old time friends had gone before and he was among the last left to remind us of the olden days. Mr. Standley was never out of the county but once, then when he went overland with his son in law, Robert Gentry to Siloam Springs, Arkansas. He was never on a railroad train, although he could have done so anytime within 50 years. His wife died when his oldest child was about nine years old and his youngest about two months. He raised the family of children and all of them show the care of a loving father. It was his custom to gather them around him on Sunday and spend several hours reading the old family bible to them. For many years he was a member of the Baptist church, holding his membership in McCroskie Creek. The funeral was held at the home Monday at 1 o’clock conducted by W.W. Robertson. The internment was in Powell Cemetery. 305
