DAVIS, Joseph, P. 0. Knightstown, Henry County; Farmer, Sec. 24; fourth son of John Davis (born in Allegheny County, Penn., July 23, 1785) and Susannah Temple (born in Pennsylvania in 1783); was born in Ohio December 6, 1815, and settled in this county in 1851. Married December 27, 1838, Elizabeth, daughter of I.[Enos] and Nanc Anderson, natives of North Carolina; she was born July 14. 1815 and died without issue November 25, 1847. Married May 23, 1850, Sarah, daughter of Thomas and Ellen Stanley who was born August 8, 1824; children-Mary Isabel, May 20, 1851, died July 8, 1851; John T., July 25, 1852; Amanda F., January 2, 1854; Perry, December 19, 1855; James E., June 13, 1859. Mr. Davis' father came to Indiana and settled in what is now Henry County about 1824, where the subject of our sketch grew to manhood; was a soldier in the war of 1812, serving under the gallant Commodore Perry in most of his naval engagements; was in moderate circumstances when he came to the State, but accumulated considerable property, and assisted all his children to start in life. He died January 18, 1864, and his wife January 14, 1868. Both members of the Society of Friends. Mrs. Davis' parents were natives of North Carolina; father born August 20, 1804, died July 12, 1875; mother, born November 23, 1807, is still living. Both members of the Christian Church. Mr. Joseph Davis has 160 acres of land, well improved, and is in good circumstances. His religion is Justice, Charity and Honesty.. His father built the first saw-mill in Henry County;. also built a woolen-mill, which he ran for twelve years. 332
