John Brown agent for Sanuel Denman and Miss Adams heir at law of William
Cockran of Pennsylvania and Maryland for $75.00 on the waters of Meadow Branch
of Big Rock Creek. The Grantors will keep the mine rights on the land. The
witnesses were C. H. Worley and W. Edwards. This deed was proved on April 20,

1845 Dec 3 - Yancey Co., NC - J.[Julius] S.[Samuel] Garland sold Rickles
Stanley 2 tracts of land for $100.00. One tract of 50 acres on meadow branch of
Big Rock Creek adjoining David Baker. The other tract of 15 acres between
meadow branch and Bad Creek, conditional line with J. S. Garland and William
Hill, adjoins Swinfield Stanley and George Hobson. Witness was C. H. Worley.
This deed was proved on January 26, 1858 and registered on 19 May 1858. 394

C. Wilson and Issac S. Herrell. This deed was proven in the Fall Term 1850 and
recorded Fall Term 1850. Note this is the same 100 acres that Rickles sold

1852 Apr 10 - Yancey Co., NC - W. J. Brown agent for John J. Donaldson of
Maryland sold 20 acres to Rickles Stanley on Big Rock Creek for $75.00. The
grantor to keep mines and mineral rights. This land adjoined Stanley, R.S. and
George Hobson and Capt. Guttridge Garland. Witnesses were Charles Burleson and
George Hobson. This deed was proved on April 22, 1858. 397
1858 Jul 5 - Yancy Co.,NC - Rickles Stanley sold 9 3/4 acres to Nancy Barnett
for natural love and affection that he has unto Nancy, his daughter on Big Rock
Creek adjoining Garland. Witnesses were Henry Masters and J. E. Masters. This
deed was proven on October 28, 1859 and registered on 27 Feb 1860. 398
1859 Jan 22 - Yancey Co., NC - Rickles Stanley to Nancy Barnett 44 acres on
Meadow Branch of Big Rock Creek for $100.00 adjoining Swinfield Stanley and
Thomas Garland. Witnesses were John Frazier and Thomas Gardner. This deed
proved on April 24, 1859 and recorded on 14 May 1859. 399
Research: "She told him she remembered old Rickles Stanley mounting his
horse in front of the old house,. . . and start to southwest Virginia to see
his folks. She remembered that he made at least three journeys while she was a
small girl." Interview by Lawrence L. Stanley with Cissy Green,
daughter of Joseph Stanley and granddaughter of old Rickles Stanley. 400
Oral History and the written history by Lawrence L. Stanley, descendant of
Rickles, state that Rickles descends from an Alfred Stanley for whom Stanley
Valley was named. This Alfred Stanley built a cabin in Stanley Valley in 1777
in Hawkins County present day Tennessee. While Alfred was away from the cabin,
cutting timbers, he heard screams and came running to find his wife and a child
murdered by Indians under the direction of a red headed Indian Chief known as
Benge. Stanley then sold his land and moved back to Virginia where he married
again had son Rickles. No documentation has been found to support this oral
history and written history.
Rickles married Olivia "Olly" HILL, daughter of Swinfield HILL &
Martha (mn unk) HILL. Born ca 1778 in Henry Co., Va.401 Olivia "Olly" died in
Burke Co.(now Mitchell Co.), NC aft 1870, she was 92.
Are Olivia Hill who married Rickles Stanley and Delilah Hill who married Thomas
Stanley possibly sisters? Both of these women named sons Swinfield.
