1889 Nov 26 - Knox Co., Tenn. - Will of John M. Stanley:
In the name of God Amen, I John M. Stanley
of the county of Knox and State of Tennessee
being of sound mind and memory and considering
the uncertanity of this frail and transitory life, do
therefore make and ordain publish and declare this to be
my last will and testament. That is to say: first
after all my lawful debts are paid and discharged
the reside of my estate real and personal -
I bequeath and dispose of as follows to wit
To my beloved wife Norah E. Stanley Sixty acres of
land by estimation where I now reside in the
7th district of Knox County Tennessee
which land is described as follows:
Beginning on a rock and sourwood bush in the
line of Perry Stedmans decd then south 70 west
with the old line to a stake the old corner. Thence
south 25 west 56 poles to a post oak thence north 45
west with said old line to Grant Grimmels south corner
on said line thence east with said Larews line 4 poles east
of the said Larews southeast corner thence south 30
east with the old line six or eight feet south of the east corner
of the horse lot thence to the beginning.
I do also I will and bequeath to my wife Norah E. Stanley
all the household furniture except one quilt, said
quilt belongs to my son Jesse S. Stanley. Also, one
chest that belonged to my first wife it belongs to her children
with her clothing. Also I will and bequeath to my wife
Norah E. Stanley all the kitchen furniture stove pots
and plates, except one set of flowered plates I give
to Elisabeth Larew & Melissa J. Hutcheson. I will unto
my wife one sewing machine belonging to my wife
Norah E. Stanley. I will Norah E. Stanley one clock.
I further will unto my wife one milk cow and one
heifer also what hay maybe on hands the rest corn
the present crop of potatoes with all the garden vegetables
One ax what plows I have also one set of plow gears
and singletrees.
I will and bequeath to my daughter Melissa J. Hutcheson

now a rock thence south with the conditional line
dividing the gum spring to a chestnut in the old line

I give bequeath and devise all the rest residue and
remainder of my real & personal estate to my children
R. G. Stanley, Parlena Smith, I. A. Stanley, G. W. Stanley, J. S. Stanley
also Catherine Rommes two children is to shear
Equal with one of my own living children Elias Warwick
and Leona Weaver, also Armstead W. Herron I will
one half that I have willed to one of my own children
Melissa J. Hutcheson is not to receive anything my
Estate until the others shall receive enough to make
them equal to what she has received in land valued
at one hundred dollars and Elisabeth Larew has
also received one hundred dollars she is not to have
anything from my estate until the shall receive the
amount of one hundred dollars that Parlena Smith has
received twenty three dollars that is to be deducted
from her amount I. A. Stanley has received twenty
six dollars that is to be deducted from his amount
G. W. Stanley has received thirty dollars that is to be
deducted from his amount all notes and accounts
due me from children or others. And the amounts
equally divided to all may shear alike
The real & personal property that I have willed
unto my wife is not to be taken to pay any of my
debts until the rest of my real & personal estate
is exhausted.
Likewise I make constitute and appoint W. R.
Lammie to be executor of this my last will and
Testament hereby revoking all former wills by
me made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my
name and affixed my seal this 25th day of
November in the year of our Lord one

R. G. Stanley & wife Truly[Freely] Stanley, G. W. Stanley and wife Susan Stanley, all of Knox Co., Tenn. and Parlena Smith of Zrucile, Jasper Co., Mo. formely Parlena Stanley sold to E. C. Camp all their right and title to 150 acres of land for $50.00. This land conveyed by will to John M. Stanley to his children. Witnesses J. C. Bradley, J. S. Grisson, E. W. Atkins and P. D. Hurt. abt 1828 when John Morton was 26, he first married Elizabeth HERRING. Born ca 1805 in Virginia. Elizabeth died in Knox Co., Tenn. ca 1881, she was 76.

Elizabeth's maiden name may be Herring, but that has not been proved.
