747. Elisha STANLEY. Born on 15 Oct 1822 in Burke Co. (now Mitchell Co.), NC. Elisha died in Fannin Co., Ga. on 8 Sep 1864, he was 41.

Elisha was murdered by the "Georgia Homeguard, " he was sitting in his blacksmith shop with his son Buell on his lap, when he was shot through the head and instantly killed.
Lawrence L. Stanley of Ellajay, Georgia, in his book "A Rough Road in a Good Land" tells of this horrible incident. Lawrence's great grandfather was a brother to Elisha. After killing Elisha and wounding his nephew, the Homeguard ransacked the home of Elisha's brother, which was nearby. One of the gang came out of the house carrying a quilt that Telethia, the niece of Elisha had newly quilted. Seeing the thug with her quilt, enraged her to the point she snatched it from his hands. Another one of the guards, seeing this, struck Telithia on the side of her head with his rifle. The blow fractured the ear drum, the resulting infection destroyed the eardrum on the other side. She lost the sight in her right eye. The side on which the rifle butt landed, her power of speech was effected. This woman lived to be 80 years old and was stone deaf until the day she died. That same day, Evans Hughes, a brother-in-law to Elisha, having married his sister Vian Stanley, was tied to a tree by this gang and shot. Mrs. Jane Hughes Stanley, together with Mrs. Falls, wrapped the bodies of Elisha Stanley and Evans Hughes in blankets and buried both men in the same grave. 1092
