According to Irvin Stanley, the bible of Margaret was used as a pillow for Sion when he died, and was buried with him. 216

Margaret Wood widow of Wm. R. Wood decd.
complaining showeth unto your worships that
her said husband has died a short time since
leaving her unprovided for that he left a
small personal estate out of which she is
entitled to one years support for herself
and family. She therefore prays your
worships to appoint a Justice of the Peace
and three freeholders whose duty it shall
be to view said estate and lay off to
her one years support for herself and

This case coming to be heard it is consi-
dered by the court that the petitioners Margaret
Wood is the widow of of the intestate William
R. Wood, that she is entitled to one years
support for herself and family. It is therefore
ordered adjudged and decreed by the Court
that Paul Worth a Justice of the Peace and
Simpson Snow, A. H. Dobson and Thos. J.
Doss freeholders who shall go upon the premises
and out of the stock, crop, and provisions on
hand lay off and allot to the petitoner suff-
icient for one years support for herself &
family in addition to the articles set apart
by Law, and in case there is not sufficient
of the crop Stock and provision on hand
to assess the deficeincy in money to be paid
to her by the administrator out of the first
money that may come into his hands and
report to the next term of this court

R. Wood Family Cemetery.

The estate of William Riley Wood was settled in late 1860 by his brother in law James Stanley. W. R. Wood was the brother of Thomas Wood, James Wood, Sarah “Sallie” Wood, Sabra and others. 216

I shall proceed to sell at his late residence on Monday

belonging to said estate viz one likely Yoke of Stears
and Cart, some other cattle, some Sheep and Hogs
Corn, Wheat, & Rye, fodder &c also household & kitchen
furniture Farming utensels &c &c. on a Credit of Six
Months - Septr. 29th 1860. James Stanley Admr.
NB. All indebted to the above named estate are hereby
requested to make immediate payment
and all those having claims against the Estate of the said
Wm. R. Wood are requested to bring them forward for
settlement within the time prescribed by Law or this Notice

in obedience to the annexed order proceeded
on the 29th day of Octr. 1860 to view the
Estate of Wm. R. Wood Decd. and out of the
Crop Stock & Provisions on hand we have
laid off & alloted to Margaret Wood widow
as follows (viz) 4 live hogs,
all the honey on hand, 85 bushels of Sound Corn, 3 lbs
of wool, all pumpkins on hand - and there
not being a sufficiency on hand to complete
a years support for the said widow & her fam-
ily (Six in number) we therefore assess the
deficiency at the sum of Twenty Dollars
and hereby authorize & direct James Stanley
Administrator of the said Wm. R. Wood decd.
to pay over to the said Margaret Wood the
above amount - And we have further laid
off and allotted to the said Margaret Wood
one bed & furniture, one Loom, one wheel
& one pair of cards as her absolute property & have
put in ther possession of the same.

To the Hon. supr.
court of said county your petitioners
would respectfuly show
I. That they are tenants in common of
the following tract of land in said
county on Double Creeks adjoining the
lands of Simeon[Simpson] Snow, Wesley
Whitaker and others bounded as
follows beginning at a white oak
Thoms. Wood's old corner north ten chains
to a black oak west 45 chs. to a post oak
then south 34 chs & 14 links to a stake
then East with Wesley Whitakers line
then chs to a hickory Harden Holyfield
corner in the old field, then east 25 chs.
to a white oak the north 18 chs to
a small bush on the branch, then down
said branch 6 chs. to the creek then north 6 degrees
east 9 chs to the creek then north 92 chs.
to a white oak then to the beginning
containing two hundred acres more or less.
II. That the said land decended to the
found last named petitioners, upon
the death of W. R. Wood - the two
last named to wit Ira and Wm. R.
are minors under the age of 21 years
who petition by their next of kin
Margaret Wood who is the widow of
decd. and mother of petitioners.
III. That your petitioners are entitled
to have partition of the aforesaid
lands among them, and the widow
& co petitioners is also entitled to
dower in the aforesaid lands.
Relief:
May it please the court to order
a writ to issue to the sheriff of
said county commanding him to
summon 5 free holders connected
with the petitioners neither by affinity
nor consongunity, who after being
by him duly sworn to do with
Justices between the several tenants in
common, shall view the aforesaid
lands and premises and allot &
set apart to the petitioner & widow
Margaret Woods one third part
in value thereof including the dwelling
house and outhouses
And at the same time to divide
by proper metes and bounds to
lay off and set apart to each of the
petitoners an equal share of said
lands, to wit one share to
Sion Wood, one share to Amy Wood
one share to Ira Wood & one share to
W. R. Wood and for that purpose the
whole may be divided into four
equal shares among the four
petitoners and tenents in common
the portions of each divided on which
the dower of Margaret to be held by
them subject to the life estate of
the said Margeret And if an order of
petition cannot otherwise be had
then to charge the mroe valuable
dividend or dividends with such
sum or sums as may be necessary
to make them equal with the dividends
or dividends of inferior value
And report their proceedings to
court under their hands & seals
as the law directs.
And your petitioner as in
duty bound will ever pray &c.

As ordered by the court I summoned the Said
commissioners to appear on the lands of
W. R. Wood on the 5th of October 1876 and after
viewing the premises and being duly sworn
they layed off and called to the widow as
as dower as follows - Beginning on a white oak
the Beginning corner of the tract runs north
ten chs to a black oak west ten chs to a
poplar South forty four chs to a Sourwood
East ten chs to a white oak north eighteen chs
to a branch then down the branch north 65 degrees
East Seventeen chs 50 links to a hickory north
twelve chs to a white oak then to the beginning
containing Sixty six 6/10 acres and we also
layed off and lotted to the said heirs as
follows: Lot #1 to T. E. Snow and wife Amy Bounded
as follows Beginning on a white oak runs north 10 chs
to a black oak west 17 chs to a hickory then
north 12 chs to a white oak thence to beginning
including 50 acres. Lot #2 - to W. R. Wood to pay
to Lot #1 ten dollars and to Lot #4 fifty
dollars bounded as follows Beginning on a rock
runs South 11 chains to a hickory west 27 chains to a
post oak South 19 chs to a dogwood then
East to the beginning containing 50 acres.
Lot #3 - to Ira Wood to pay Lot #1
ten dollars and Lot 4 fifty dollars
Bounded as follows Beginning on a
Rock runs west 27 chs to a dogwood South
16 chs to a locus Stump East 18 chs to a Stake
in the field South 10 chs to a hickory East 10 chs
to a water oak then north to the beginning
Including 50 acres.
Lot #4 Sion Wood Bounded as follows
Beginning on a Rock runs south 26 chs to a
water oak East 15 chs to a white oak north
18 chs to a branch then down the branch north
65 degrees East 17 chs 50 links to a hickory
then west to the Beginning including 50 acres. Given under our

Matilda Snow, wife of S. W. Snow, being
sworn says that at the close of the
war [Civil War], and in the absence of her husband
S. W. Snow, but by his direction, the
vouchers and other papers of S. W. Snow
administrator of Riley Wood, were,
along with other valuable papers of
said Snow, Concealed by her from the
Federal Troops, and could not by
deligent search of herself and others
afterward be found and have never
been found.

of W. R. Wood decd.
S. W. Snow admr being duly sworn says that
all of the estate of the deceased which
came into his hands is containied in
his inventory found in book [blank] page [blank]
That at the close of the war his vouchers
along with other valuable papers were
concealed from the Federal Troops and
lost and hence he is unable to give
an exact itemized debit and credit statement
of account.
That of the notes so inventoried it is
his best recollection that the following
notes, to wit:
2 notes on Wm. Stanley for $127.06
1 note on H. Holyfield for $62.35
2 notes on Andrew Wood for $17.00
1 note on Ruel Snow for $9.00
1 note on J. M. Cloud for $2.50
1 note on T. J. Doss for $19.09
1 note on John Ellis for $2.50
were applied by him to the payment
of the debts of his intestate as
follows : To B. C. Myers a debt for about $6.00
To J. W. Hamlin a debt for about $200.00
To Crumpler and York a debt for about $35.00
To H. M. Waugh (amt not collected)
That the notes due by William Doss were paid
by Mrs. Margaret Wood during the minority
of her children and used by them, as per
receipt.
That the note on Margaret Wood was
never paid to him she being widow of decd.
That the notes on Wm. M.
Norman and Wm. Bowles were lost by
Bankruptcy and insolvency of parties it is his
recollection
That notes on John H. Dobson and Jesse Bullin
were not collected owing to insolvency but
if so they were applied to payment of
debts of decd.
That after 1868 he paid to Paul Worth out
of his own effects a debt of $18.75
principal and int. of a note given to
Samuel Key by intestate.
That after payment of debts as above
stated he collected the amount of five
dollars and paid it to Mrs. Wood
widow of decd as per receipt and used by
her & the heirs of intestate during their
minority.
That after payment of the other debts of
intestate there was still due Joseph Dobson
a debt for about one hundred and fifty
dollars and admr having no assets the
said debt to Joseph Dobson was by
agreement with Mrs. Wood paid by the
hire of Ira Wood, one of the heirs of
intestate, then under age, to said
Dobson for 1 year.
That the note inventoried against P.
Chandler for $100.00 it is his recollection
was due James Stanley and came into
he hands of Jesse Stanley his admr.
and was no part of the estate of Wm. R.
Wood decd.
That it is his recollection that the Ewel
Belton debt and the receipts mentioned
in the inventory were papers in hands
of James Stanley, Const. and former
administrator of W. R. Wood and are no
part of W. R. Wood's estate.
That admr. has no assets in his hands
belonging to estate of said intestate and
has never had beyond the amount required
for payment of his just debts as
above set forth
That he paid for recording inventory
and has paid the sum of ten dollars
attorneys fee for advice &c in the settlement
of intestate's estate.
That he has retained nothing as Commissioners
in the settlement of said estate.

Lee volunteered 10 August 1861 in Dobson, as a Private in Company “B”, Second Battalion, NC Troops, and marched with the company in Danville, Pittsylvania County, Va., where they boarded a train for Richmond. He was taken prisioner by the enemy 8 February 1862, and was paroled at Elizabeth City, NC, 21 February 1862. He stayed at home until the company reorgainzed in August, 1862. He was active until taken prisioner again on 14 Jul 1864, at Washington,DC. He was confined at Elimira, NY, until paroled 30 Jul 1865. He came home and became a miller in Rockford Township. He did apply for pension, but there is no record of him receiving it. 216

John served in the civil war in the same company as his brother, but was killed in the Battle of Charlottesville. Apparently his body was brought home to be buried. 216
