From Yadkin Valley Living Magazine:
Elizabeth Catherine Baker Stanley was born February 22, 1860, in Surry County, NC. She was the daughter of Dave and Bettie Hutchens Baker. Elizabeth was my grandmother. For some reason that the writer does not know, Elizabeth was not raised by her parents. She and her brother, Thomas Jefferson Baker, were raised by Richard Turner Pilson and his wife, Nancy Jane Joyce Pilson. The Pilsons moved to Surry County from Patrick County, Virginia, before 1867. The Pilsons donated the land and helped to organize the Liberty Primitive Baptist Church in Surry County. Elizabeth was member of that church. In 1881, Elizabeth Baker married Richard Johnson Stanley, who was born in 1853, in Surry County. His parents were Jesse Stanley and Sarah Wilmoth Stanley, now known as Fairview Community on Bear Creek Church Road. They were called Dick and Liz Stanley. Dick was a school teacher, a magistrate and a farmer. He was also a member of the Rusk Masonic Lodge #456, A.E. and M. The schools where he taught were near his home on land that he donated to the Surry County Board of Education, at Stanley School and Fairview School. Liz was a homemaker and a dedicated wife and mother. She and her husband had nine children: Jesse Turner, 1882-1896; Thomas Edgar, 1883-1942; Willie Richard, 1883-1984; Kizzie Leticia, 1889-1971; Joseph Stephen, B. & D., 1890; Levora Elizabeth, 1893-1970; Vissie Mildred,1896-1977; Morgan Gray, 1898-1981 and Albert Daniel, 1904-1976. I did not know my grandmother, but I have heard so much about her from my mother, Vissie Beamer, and many other relatives and friends who knew her - I wish that I could have known her. She was a very religious woman. People who did know her had a lot of love and respect for her. One person said, "Whatever Elizabeth Stanley said, he would believe, even if it sounded unbelievable." Elizabeth was a person who loved her husband and her children. She always seemed to be at peace with God, with others and with herself. She was very concerned about being good to her children. Although times were hard, the children were encouraged to get a good education and to do their best at their work. Some years ago, a cousin, Carl Baker, told me that he thought as much of her as any aunt he had. He said that when he was a child he always liked going with his family to visit Aunt "Liz" because she always had time for children - hers and all others. My mother remembered going back to the old home church, Liberty Primitive Baptist (now Liberty Baptist Church) with her mother, Elizabeth, who would take the children in a buggy or a wagon pulled by horses to the church several miles from where the Stanley family lived. From all that I have heard about my grandmother, I feel sure that she was a fine Christian woman. I am also confident that a lot of the influence for good in life came from the example set by the people who reared her, Richard Turner and Nancy Jane Pilson. I thank my grandmother for the Christian mother she was. Her love for God is evident in the kind of example she set for future generations. One of her favorite hymns was, "I Will Arise and Go to Jesus." She died in 1917, and is buried in the Stanley Family Cemetery, across the road from their homeplace in Surry County. 1309
