He continued in this work for seven years, taking a leading part in organization work for several new churches. From there he was called to the pastorate of Calvary Baptist in Wilmington. The Rev. Mr. McKaughan served three pastorates in Virginia after which he was called to Rutherford and then to French Broad Baptist Church Asheville. The state and home mission boards then called him to serve as missionary and hospital pastor at Oteen. In 1835, the Rev. Mr. McKaughan suffered serious injury and was unable to be active for a year.
