Journal had considerable information on the SMITHS of Surry County, NC and Orange Co.,Va. I was elated to read this because in my research in Dobson Courthouse I had been able to go back to William SMITH, who by censuses was born in Va. about 1790 but there are many William SMITHS in VA. According to William’s will, his wife at the time of his death was Elizabeth; in researching Va. marriages 1700-1799, compiled by Cecil McDonald, I found no William and Elizabeth marriage in Orange Co., but did find Charles SMITH m. Jane MARTEN___?1783; Robert SMITH m. Ann COOPER/CONNER____?1777; John SMITH m. Sukey SMITH____?1796; Stephen SMITH m. Blessing STEVENS____?1793. These were all in Orange Co.,Va. On a map of Surry Co, NC that I purchased, it showed the name of early settlers, with their names and dates of settlement. The first grant that we found for the one I consider to be my William SMITH was #1667(Deed Book G, p.255), 150 acres, west side of Beaver Dam Creek 28th day of August “in the twentieth year of our Independence”. A 2nd grant #2342 was recorded 17 Dec 1803 for acres; interestingly, a Jesse SMITH had Land Grant #2341 and recorded the same day (both Deed Book L, p. 136), just a coincidence?? Other SMITH names and dates: Charles 1781 and 1789; Daniel 3 different ones 1792-2 and 1790; Thomas 1778 and 1780; Grizell 1789; John 1784; Stephen K. 1784. Were these all sons or nephews of Stephen J. K. SMITH whose will was presented at Court 27th May in 1784?? Anyone having information or wishing to exchange information, please contact. Orella H. Benjamin CULLER (born March 15, 1819 in Forsyth County, NC) was listed as a child of John and Elizabeth (MOSER) CULLER but Solomon was omitted. That same Benjamin listed Solomon as his brother on a LDS Church record. Solomon CULLER was born November 22, 1810 probably in Forsyth County, North Carolina and died in Surry County in was listed in the 1862, 1870, and 1880 Surry County population and tax lists. Solomon's children were: Constantine W. (died in the Civil War), Uriah G.(died in the Civil War), Laura E.(CULLER) SANDERS, and Loretta (CULLER) CARMICHAEL. Solomon listed his father and mother as born in North Carolina. The earliest mention of the CULLER family in North Carolina that I could find was a listing for John CULLER and family in the 1810 U.S. Census who were living in Stokes County. There are many CULLER listings later in Surry County. One of the family myths was that brothers immigrated from Germany and changed the name from KOHLER or a variation of that spelling to CULLER. I would be very grateful for any information confirming Solomon's parents and the early history of the CULLER family.
