RIGGINS/RIGGANS - HODGE - KING - I am writing in hopes of finding some remnant of my ancestry from Surry County, NC. I do not need to go back with this but so far...but, I have an underlying burning question as to what happened with my family. I have had help in determining that there was a Joseph M. RIGGINS in Surry County ~ 1870, my great, great, grandfather. I also know that he had a son, Tyre Franklin RIGGINS, who married Jane HODGE of Surry County. Jane and Tyre found themselves in the Poor House at Dobson by the time they were 53 & 48 respectively. Evidently Tyre died there, no records available, and Jane would leave to go live with their daughter in Mexico, Missouri. Jane and Tyre had two children, Lucy Lavora RIGGINS (my grandmother), and Mary Elizabeth RIGGINS. Both of these girls at some point in their later childhood had to leave Surry County and go to Hillsville. My relatives in Hillsville have letters that indicate they were old enough to work in more affluent households in the Hillsville area. We also know that somehow these two girls ended up with two half siblings, Jesse KING and Nancy KING (same mother, Jane, different father, evidently). I am not so much interested in chasing this back any further than Joseph M. RIGGINS. I would however very much like to know if there is any remnant of any of these families, KING, RIGGINS, or HODGE, that might know of these folks and why my grandmother and her brothers and sisters had to leave Surry County for Hillsville. If you have any ideas or trails that I might follow please let me know. Dobson is the only township that is ever mentioned or recorded in association with any of these people except for Jesse KING, who left Hillsville and moved to Greensboro where he would marry and raise a family. Jesse KING died Jan. 2, 1953 in Greensboro with no family or kin recorded. And, the Poor House that Tyre and Jane found themselves in is now an alcohol and drug rehabilitation Center in Dobson. I'm not sure exactly how all of this stuff works, but I would love to know a little more of the background, or at least see if there is anybody else left that I'm kin to or knows something about this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Frank Hall

BURRIS - TAYLOR - HUDSON - MORTON - VANHOY - I am researching the family of Solomon BURRIS (b. 10 Dec.1752 , d. 21 May 1845 in Stanly Co.) It is thought that his father was Joshua BURRIS who may have originially lived in the Surry Co. area before moving south. Solomon BURRIS married Judith TAYLOR ( b. 10 Nov. 1766 in Surry Co.) . It is thought that her parents were Robert TAYLOR and Elizabeth Ann HUDSON. Solomon and Judith had a son, Taylor BURRIS ( b. 28 Dec. 1784 in Anson or Montgomery Co.NC , d. 1824 in Surry Co.) who married Nancy MORTON. Taylor died in Surry Co. while supposedly visiting his Mother's parents, Robert and Elizabeth TAYLOR, who lived near Pilot Mt. It is thought that he may have drownd while crossing Rocky Ford on Yadkin River ( now Rockford). Taylor may be buried at the foot of Pilot Mt. in the Old Taylor Cemetery. I would like to obtain any information on Judith TAYLOR's family , and proof that her parents are Robert and Elizabeth, where they are buried, dates concerning them, etc. I would also like to get a marraige date for Solomon Burris and Judith TAYLOR. If possible, I would also like to know who is buried at the TAYLOR Cemetery, especially to get proof that TAYLOR is buried there, as well as possibly his grandparents. A record of Taylor's death and a specific date of death would also be wonderful. Apparently Taylor and Nancy lived in Surry Co. for a while because they had a child born there. Taylor and Nancy BURRIS had a daughter , Judith, ( b. either 1808 or 1814 in Surry Co.) who married James VANHOY (b. 18 10 in Surry Co.) Both Judith and James died in Stanly Co., NC and are buried in Stanly Co. but they were married 9 Dec. 1833 in Surry Co. Proof of these dates (definite birth date of Judith BURRIS) would be great, as well as any other family information about Taylor and Nancy living in Surry Co. Any and all information concerning these people will be most greatly appreciated.
