MATTHEWS -WILLIARD -DEAN - I am researching a paternal line: MATTHEWS. Jacob, my earliest documented MATTHEWS , married Phebe WILLIARD in Surry County, January 14, 1823. The couple relocated to GA, and both died in Dawson County GA, Phebe about 1870, and Jacob January 18, 1874. They are my gggrandparents. I am attempting to find Jacob's parents, their names and birthplaces. I have found a James MATTHEWS who married a Winnie DEAN in Surry County (date unknown, but prior to 1790). The timing would be correct if Jacob is his son; James MATTHEWS had Aaron, born 1790, and Absolom, born unknown. I have located these names in the early Surry County census records, but I am now at a dead end. There is a possibility that James was born in Virginia. Hoping that someone can point me in the correct direction. I have a lot of information on the MATTHEWS (once they are in Georgia) which I am more than happy to share. Barb Brown Hootman
HIATT - I recently learned that my gggfather was married in Surrey Co. on 1 Oct 1814 to an Edith HIATT. I also learned that he served in the War of 1812 an Ohio outfit. That is all I have been able to find out. Any and all information would be greatly appreciated. Verne Deubler

LAWRENCE - My family all still live in Surry County near
the Mountain Park area. I live now in Charlotte. This November I am
traveling to England and I wanted to find information about my family
before I went. I thought that your site would be a great start. Here
is what I know so far. My great-grandfather's name was John Wesley
LAWRENCE. He died around the 20's or 30's. He was married
twice. His first wife was stabbed and robbed in the early 1900's. He
later remarried a DODSON woman and birthed my grandfather,
Winfred LAWRENCE. I remember reading my great-great
grandfathers name in the Surry County history book, when I was in
High School. However I do not remember it now. What do you suggest
for me to my research.

CASS-MITCHELL-MOODY-I am trying to help my wife sort out a "Knot" in the family tree. She is a direct decendant of Aaron CASS & Elizabeth MITCHELL of Wilkes Co, NC. Ancestry World Tree entries indicate Aaron's father was James CASS born abt 1770 in NC. We have a copy of this guy's will naming all the kids and confirming Aaron is the son of James and Sarah CASS of Wilkes Co. One of my wife's family has done more extensive research in the Wilkes/Iredell/Surry Co areas of NC and he maintains that the James CASS (father of Aaron) is the son of a James (Cast) CASS and Nancy (MOODY) CASS - large property holders on the boarders of these counties. James (Cast) CASS came over from England and his linage in documented back to the mid-1500! Problem ... My wife has records that show James & Nancy did have a son - James S. - in abt 1770 ... but more recent internet findings indicate that he married an Elizabeth MOODY and had about 9 kids - the names of which don't match Aaron's clan. So we have a CASS line coming forward from 1550 to Wilkes Co, NC ... and a CASS line going back from Kansas, to Indiana, to Wilkes Co NC ... but the link between the two is unclear. Can anyone shed some light on Aaron's parents or grand parents? Gary Stussie

DAVIS-WELCH-MILLER-HOPPES-LOWRANCE-BRAKE-KING-THURMAN - I am trying to find the parents or any relatives of the following person: Morgan T. DAVIS-supposedly m. Nancy WELCH 1816 in Surry Co. NC. Nancy's parents were: Ephraim WELCH and Elizabeth MILLER (her parents were Jacob MILLER and Barbara HOPPES) Ephraim's parents were David WELCH and Hannah Catherine LOWRANCE. One source indicates that Jefferson DAVIS might be the father of Morgan T. DAVIS. I do know that some sources have Morgan DAVIS migrating to KY (possibly Monroe Co.) and then on to Scott and Morgan Co., IL. I do know that in 1838 he was in Morgan Co., IL as he signed the consent for a daughter, Mary, to marry Jesse BRAKE. Mary is probably about 17 yrs. old (b. yr. abt. 1821 and probably in Surry Co., NC). In 1840 Morgan DAVIS is listed in the Pulaski Co., MO census just two names above Jesse BRAKE, his son in law. There is a letter that a Hiram WELCH (son of Ephraim and Elizabeth WELCH) writes back to his family in Scott Co IL in which he makes reference to " Moran (Morgan) DAVIS, Johny KING and Jesse BRAK and John THURMAN and old Brak and two of his sun in laws" as living near him in "Pulasky Co." MO. This was written in Dec. 1839 from MO. I would like to hear from anyone with information on any of the above persons and most particularly, Morgan Davis. Thank you. Sonja Fletcher

ADAMS-TODD - Searching for burial place of Sarah (Sally) TODD ADAMS (wife of George ADAMS). Sarah was born 15 May 1817 and died 1890/91. George was born 1815-18 and died 1868-69. They married in Surry County 29 July 1837. It is possible that Sarah was buried in Surry County by her son Newton ADAMS with whose family she was living in Elkin, NC. To the best of this researcher's knowledge, all the Adams' from the vicinity of Forbush in Surry, now Yadkin County, and between 1830 and 1850 or even later, all of Adams' in Yadkin, were descended from William and Susanna ADAMS who came down from Chester/Lancaster County, PA to the Cane Creek Meeting area near Greensboro in 1756 and later moved in 1789 to near Forbush and there died in 1816. If anyone has traced the later Surry County ADAMS' back to Philadelphia, or the UK, I'd be interested in hearing their beginnings. Budd Adams
