SURRY COUNTY, N.C. TAX LISTS
"LOST TAXES"
The clerk's book of taxes below for the years of 1790-1800 was lost. There
are original lists for these years in the NC Archives in Raleigh but,most are
faded, torn and did not survive in their entirety. These taxes were
microfilmed by the Mormon Church in the early years before the book was lost.

They were placed in the film labeled deed book A - C. When looking at deed
book C it was discovered that the tax boohs for 1790-1800 was placed there.
We were "lucky" to have found a microfilmed copy of these early years for
Surry County.

The tax lists below were taken from the originals in the NC Archives in
Raleigh. All information was included. The value of tax lists prior to 1850
is that they supply the names of persons that were not head of households,
who did not own real property and therefore do not appear on land records,
jury lists etc. The taxable area includes part of present day Yadkin County.
They include the following data: acreage with location showing the waterway
and neighboring landowners, town lots, store owners, value of land, number of
white polls, black polls and studs.

STOKES COUNTY, N. C. TAX LISTS

The Tax lists prior to 180 are valuable because a poll tax was levied. They
named persons who did not own land and were not head of households; therefore
these names will not appear on other lists such as jury duties and land
records. They are also an aid in tracing persons who were passing through to
another area or state and only stayed in North Carolina for a short time. In
some cases father and son's are named. The tax lists below were taken from
microfilm and then proofed by the clerks books and the original loose records
There were sometimes names on the original loose lists not copied in the book
by the clerk. These lists have the information from both the books and the
original lists in one publication.
